Five Key Points To Consider When Buying Collectibles And Memorabilia

When you are an avid sports memorabilia and collectibles collector, what would you consider before making the final purchase or before making the trade? Here are some of them.

1. Type. There is no denying that sports collectibles and memorabilia come in various types. There are the uniforms and gears used during a historical game. There also the sports cards which are at times autographed personally by a player and other collectibles like bobblehead dolls, caps, shirts and even posters.

If you are still starting on your collection, then it would be important that you decide on what you are going to collect. Will it be collectibles or will it be memorabilia? Keep in mind that the two are different. However, if you can't decide on the two and you want a more diverse collection then you can always collect both.

2. Cost. You must be aware that authentic items like sports cards, vintage ticket stubs and programs are valuable; therefore it is naturally pricey. If someone offers you an item at a cheaper price and claims that it is authentic, you might want to reconsider buying it.

There is no denying that collecting items like sports memorabilia and collectibles is pricey, so it would be best that you ensure that you will be able to keep up with the cost of your new found hobby. In addition, it is hard to find authentic yet cheap items because these items are of great value for some.

3. Condition. For sports cards and collectibles, this is of utmost importance. Sports cards that are bent, torn and crumpled are considered less valuable. So don't get fooled by individuals selling you torn sports cards because sports cards are of great value when these are in excellent condition meaning no bent edges, no crumpling and not torn.

Collectibles like bobblehead dolls and other items should also be in tip top condition to be considered valuable. You should pay attention to this aspect especially when you are acquiring that item through trading or if you are buying it from its previous owner. For vintage items, it is natural to expect a little discoloration or some slight tearing.

4. Authenticity. This is important especially if you are collecting memorabilia like ticket stubs, programs, gears, uniforms and even sports cards. If you are into historical occurrences, you are most likely to end up collecting vintage sports memorabilia.

With today's technology, it is easy to create a replica that can pass as authentic to the untrained eye. So, always look for that proof of authenticity. This is usually in the form of a certificate. Make sure that the certificate is signed by a recognized authentication department.

5. Source. To reduce further the risk of ending up with a replica or a fake, you must only buy from notable and recognized sources for these items. Most collectors belong to a group and during meetings they exchange or trade items from other members.

If you are going to purchase online, make sure that it is from a real site, not some bogus site that most scammers use. Do not just buy items off the streets because there is a high chance that these items are fakes and you are simply paying more for something that can be sold at a lesser price or something not worth anything at all.
